PlayStation 5 Slim Is Reportedly Coming Next Year

Lighter and cooler.

Sony has been pretty consistent with releasing slim versions of its PlayStation consoles, so a thinner PS5 is expected by fans for some time now. While the company doesn't share any details, The Leak reports that a smaller PS5 is being developed, and we will see it next year.

According to its sources, the redesigned model might not be called Slim, but it will definitely not be as bulky as the current console. Apparently, the new version uses a die-shrink treatment that reduces the size of the console. It's lighter, uses less voltage, and therefore runs cooler.

Another change PS5 will reportedly undergo is a lack of a stand when the console lies down. There are no photos of the slimmer version, so it's hard to say what exactly it means for PS5.

Although the report is not confirmed yet, there is little reason to doubt it: Sony reduced PS5's weight and power consumption in its latest models, and this DIY build shows it is possible to make PlayStation as thin as 2cm.

What's more, Tom Henderson shared similar information in September, saying that PS5 is expected to get "a unique overhaul", with the new console launching around September 2023. He also mentioned the new PS5 having a detachable disc drive, which might be how Sony got it to be slimmer and lighter.

The Leak claims the consoles' production will start in Q2, with a retail release in Q3.
