Prison Awaits Cats Who Kill Rats in Baldur's Gate 3

What if it was a shapeshifter?

One's cat does not simply kill rats without punishment in Baldur's Gate 3. Players have learned it the hard way. While everyone, including the characters in the game, understands cats' nature and mice-destroying usefulness, it doesn't stop some guards from sending the animals to serve their sentence.

Here is Redditor jasondads1's experience with Druid Grove and its inhabitants. The player overheard a conversation between a couple planning to get a cat so that it could catch rats among other things. Perhaps trying to prove their pet's worth and make it join the household, jasondads1 sent their cat to kill one of the rats running around. That was not the right move.

A guard saw it and decided to punish the animal for this terrible crime. When the player refused to part with a sizable sum of about 300 gold, the cat was sent to prison to think about its behavior. I really doubt it could ever work as these creatures can jump through bars, but the shock of it happening might have stirred something in it or the player responsible.

You might think the whole party would be imprisoned, or at least the owner of the cat, but no, cats apparently have their own will that might spread the evil around. Then again, the place is full of shapeshifting druids, so the threat of eating one of them chilling in their rat form is certainly something to look out for.

It is not the first time this happened to a poor pet. A month ago, another player reported the same baffling situation in the Grove when the familiar was taken away for threatening children.

Cats are not the only familiars that can be caged for doing something bad: even elementals are not safe from this fate

"Through a series of events that were of no fault of his own my elemental causes a massive explosion that killed 40 plus NPCs," shared nuttmegganarchist on Reddit. "The guards then confronted my elemental and caused a speech check to happen which he failed."

The fact that elementals get a chance to talk their way out of the situation is hilarious on its own. Is it a bug or a feature? Hard to say, but I wouldn't be surprised if the latter is the case considering Baldur's Gate 3's countless roleplay possibilities and sense of humor.
