3D Artist Hans Chiu has demonstrated another use case of the newest Blender's Ray Portal BSDF node, simulating how the light would bend under aberrations.
This incredibly realistic lens aberration simulation was made with a motion-tracked camera and the recently introduced Ray Portal BSDF node, transporting rays that enter another location in the scene, unleashing many opportunities for creating stunning visual effects and other rendering tricks.
In the following tweet, Hans Chiu shared a quick breakdown of the technique, explaining that for similarly utilizing Ray Portal, you need to calculate how the light would pass through a lens if it has basic aberrations including spherical, coma, field curvature, distortion, and astigmatism, then assign the resultant ray position and direction to the node.
The artist has also shared another neat take on using the node for video feedback effect:
If you're thinking what I'm thinking when you see the Ray Portal node, 3D Artist Azure Rod has recently used it for recreating Doctor Who's TARDIS:
3D Artist Cartesian Caramel has also experimented with Ray Portal, utilizing the node to set up this cool reality-warping cube and recreate the portals from the iconic game of the same name:
