Game development is a very stressful process, and as deadlines approach, non-essential features are typically the first to be cut. Hauke Thiessen's plug-in is designed to help developers make their games more energy-efficient without requiring extra time in the production schedule.
The plug-in monitors player activity every frame. If it detects no input for certain periods, it gradually reduces the frame rate and lowers the screen rendering resolution to save energy, assuming the player is inactive. After a longer period of inactivity, it can even stop rendering entirely, leaving the game window black. Once the player provides input again, the game instantly restores its original settings, ensuring that gameplay is never disrupted.
The developer notes that, especially on handheld devices, lowering power consumption can improve the player experience by extending battery life. It also helps prevent overheating, reduces the player's energy bill, and lowers the game's carbon footprint.
The Energy Saving plug-in is still in its early stages, so if you notice it isn't working as expected and have suggestions for improvement, please reach out to Hauke.
