Remedy Shows How Alan Wake 2 Looked in Early Development

Three years of progress demonstrated with a couple of screenshots.

Hyping up Alan Wake 2's impending release, Remedy Entertainment has recently shared a couple of behind-the-scenes screenshots, demonstrating how their upcoming survival horror game and a sequel to the 2010 Alan Wake looked during the earliest stages of its development and comparing the looks to how the game looks now.

Shared through their Twitter account, the first image showcases an early blockout of a game level, accompanied by a low-resolution rendition of what appears to be the protagonist himself. In stark contrast, the second screenshot presents a stunning scene from the finished game, complete with detailed textures and cinematic lighting.

According to the development team, the first screenshot dates back to September 2020, while the second one is entirely fresh, originating from September 2023, meaning that the two images encapsulate nearly three years of development progress.

"The Dark Place has drawn its appearance from Alan Wake's mind, manifesting his fears and his stories around him," wrote Remedy in the Twitter post, hinting that the new screenshot demonstrates the game's Dark Place.

Back in August, Remedy postponed Alan Wake 2's release from October 17 to October 27 so as not to clash with October's other releases, which include Assassin's Creed Mirage, Forza Motorsport, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Lords of the Fallen, MGS: Master Collection Vol. 1, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

It was also revealed earlier that the game will be exclusively available as a digital release meaning that there won't be any physical editions of the game, including for consoles. The decision proved to be controversial, with many players saying that the digital-only release made them contemplate whether to skip the game altogether.

Alan Wake 2 is coming on October 27 for PC via the Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. You can learn more and pre-order the game here.
