The game received around 1,700 negative reviews within few days after launch.
The chronicle of review bombing gains a new entry with Earth Defense Force 6, a third-person shooter from Japanese video game developer, Sandlot. The developer has announced their plans to change the requirement of signing in to an Epic Games account after the game received approximately 1700 negative reviews.
SANDLOT
Earth Defense Force 6 is the sixth main installment of the Earth Defense Force series. It was released in Japan in 2022 and was just launched globally on PS4, PS5, and PC via Steam on July 25. The two-year waiting period for English players, followed by a compulsory connection to the Epic Games Store (EGS) to play the game online, has led to widespread disappointment among players who paid $60 for the game.
One player's review reads:
"Steam says I've played Earth Defense Force 6 for three hours. All I've done is install epic online services, uninstall the game, run as administrator, set it to high performance... I still have the Error Code 3_553648128 When Starting Game. I find it incredible that they force you to link the game to Epic and then it doesn't work. Tired of trying, I'm giving up and don't recommend it to anyone. A disappointment...."
SANDLOT
Despite many players expressing their love for the game and calling it great, they still felt compelled to leave negative reviews due to the Epic account issue. Despite the developer apologizing "for the lack of advance notice" in a previous statement, players are not buying it. This sounds similar to what has happened with another third-person shooter, Helldivers 2, which got a review bombing by players who were asked to connect to PSN. As we now know, the developers eventually dropped the mandatory PSN linking requirement for PC players.
EDF6 currently has a mixed review of 50% being positive on Steam. The developers have not confirmed a timeline for when the change will be implemented.
