Nicolo Laurent confirmed that the second season is in production and explained why it will not premiere this year.
It seems that the much-anticipated sequel to Riot and Fortiche's League of Legends-based animated TV series Arcane will have to remain in everyone's waitlist for a while longer, as according to Riot Games CEO Nicolo Laurent, the show's continuation is most-certainly not coming this year.
In a recent interview shared via a Chinese social media website Bilibili, Laurent confirmed that while the second season of Arcane is currently in production, it won't premiere in 2023, citing two reasons as to why the creators are taking their time.
Responding to one of the comments, the CEO stated that the studio doesn't want to rush the production, allowing its artists and creators to focus on the sequel's quality. The second reason underlined by Laurent is that Riot hadn't been expecting Arcane to be such a massive hit, and thus, the work on the sequel only started after the 2021 premiere's conclusion.
"I just watched the third episode of Season 2, before my flight to China," stated Nicolo Laurent. "We're making progress on it. It’s not ready yet. There are two reasons for that: you want the quality, we just don't want to rush, and so that takes time, and that's a good reason. The bad reason is that, honestly, we didn’t know if Season 1 was going to be a success. So we didn't start Season 2 until after. We didn't know. And so if I'd known [Arcane was going to be successful], we could have started Season 2 way earlier, but we didn't know so we kind of waited a bit and so now we're paying the price."
