"Rockstar Never Fails to Disappoint": Community Reacts to Red Dead Redemption's PS4/Switch Port

Fans criticized the studio for delivering a "$50 PS4/Switch port of a 13-year-old game".

In case you somehow missed it, earlier today, Rockstar made an underwhelming announcement that the original 2010 Red Dead Redemption and its zombie-themed DLC Undead Nightmare are getting a port and are coming to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on August 17, 2023.

To no one's surprise, the community, which has been meticulously scrutinizing various RDR-related details and rumors for more than a year and expected either a PC port of the game or something just as big, criticized the developer for delivering a "$50 port of a 13-year-old game" to a last-gen PlayStation console and a handheld that many denounce for being incapable of running games at higher than 25 FPS.

At the moment, the port's official trailer shared via Rockstar Games' official YouTube channel has only 31K likes with 77K dislikes, showing the overwhelming disdain for the project. The comments section mirrors the likes/dislikes ratio, with multiple commenters making fun of Rockstar and letting others know of their disappointment in a variety of ways.

Here are some of the comments from YouTube:

  • "I have to give credit to Rockstar. They managed to not even reach even my lowest expectations."
  • "Rockstar never fails to disappoint us."
  • "Damn, you guys really fell from grace over the years. Love this game and I can't believe this is how you treat one of your early masterpieces."
  • "Big thanks to Larry for working so hard for this, because there is absolutely no way the company is using more than one person for those remasters."
  • "The demand was loud and clear. You had the money. The engine. The expertise. The artists. The time. And most importantly, you had the cultural responsibility of preserving your art. You chose to do the bare minimum and take the easy money. I can't even express how disappointed I feel as a fan. You were supposed to be leading this industry. I wish every hard-working employee at Rockstar the best. The heads of the company that let this happen clearly do not deserve their talent, time, and effort."
  • "$49.99 for a 13-year-old game. Truly a Rockstar moment."

Over on Twitter, the state of affairs is pretty much the same, with thousands of disappointed fans criticizing Rockstar and Take-Two for delivering the same 2010 game with no graphical/performance enhancements, no multiplayer, and no 60 FPS support for $49,99 and memeing the heck out of the situation:

Redditors also hated the announcement, bringing the "Do not buy Red Dead Redemption" post to the top of r/reddeadredemption. "It's a $50 (USD), port of a 13-year-old game," reads the original post. "No Graphical enhancements. No fps enhancements. No multiplayer. And it wasn't hard to port like MGS4 because of bad ps3 architecture. This is 100% the 360 version being ported for $50 (USD). If you want a proper remake/remaster then don't buy this cash grab."

As of right now, the post has nearly 8K upvotes and more than 1,400 comments, with many of them condemning the PS4/Switch port. Here are some of them:

  • "Don't buy it, emulate the 360 and play it for free without supporting Rockstar's shitty practices, it'll also run uncapped at whatever FPS your PC will allow."
  • "And that's exactly what they want. They want you to go 'Well, if it's the only system I have' and just bite the bullet."
  • "I still couldn't recommend someone paying $50 for an old game that probably had a downgrade to run on Switch."
  • "I bought the GOTY edition for $10 to play at 4k on my One X. $50 for a simple port on a 13yo game is something else."
  • "Not coming to PC so I won't be buying it anyway."
  • "Funny part it, it's already been backwards compatible on Xbox One since the console came out."

People bitching about this really have nothing else to do, do they? Petty. Don't like it? Don't buy it, no one wants to hear your complaining, like children who didn't get a toy at the store.
