Rumor: Assassin's Creed Black Flag Remake Removes Modern Sequences & Choreographed Combat

The game seems closer to current AC titles.

Ubisoft

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is one of the fan favorites in the series, so it was a delight to learn Ubisoft is working on its remake. However, the game might be quite different from what we saw in the original.

According to Jeux Vidéo Magazine, translated by a Reddit user, the remake will shift closer to the RPG style of recent AC games, including combat: "Inventory systems and combat [are] leaning toward the RPG style rather than the choreographed combat of the original."

This may be a big blow for fans, especially since many were looking forward to experience the good old days specifically.

Ubisoft also reportedly removed modern sequences and added a few more hours of Edward’s pirate era. Additionally, we'll likely see cut content from the original, like parts of Mary Read’s storyline.

While the map won't be bigger, islands will have more activities and side content. Expect loot and gear stats for Edward and no loading screens when moving between ship and land.

As Jeux Vidéo Magazine says, it won't be the "big budget remake" like Resident Evil 2 or Silent Hill 2 but a faithful reimagining with updates. To save money, the studio reused some assets from Skull & Bones, but you probably won't notice it. The remake is powered by Ubisoft’s Anvil engine, which was used for Assassin's Creed: Shadows.

The game is reportedly targeting early 2026, although it could be delayed to the end of the year.

Not so long ago, we also learned that Ubisoft updated the original title's Steam page, adding features that were never there but might appear in the remake, making players think that the company will replace the game. So if you hoped to have both versions on Steam, I wouldn't bet on that.
