Run Away From a Giant Catfish in This Upcoming UE5 Indie Game

Nightmares are not guaranteed but are very likely.

Have you played Shadow of the Colossus? Do you remember battling Dirge, the terrifying sand-dwelling beast chasing you across the cave with its nightmare-inducing stare? Would you like to experience the same feeling but in a different, wetter setting? If you've answered "yes" to all those questions, then you're going to love this outstanding creature demo shared recently by Game Developer Mamoru Kano for his upcoming game.

Emitting the same vibes as the aforementioned Dirge fight, the latest teaser shows the protagonist fleeing from a gigantic catfish, about 20 times the size of a regular one, with blood-red eyes and an uncanny ability to move in shallow waters.

With a design that can give Salvatore Moreau's mutated form a run for its money, the creature was rigged and animated using Unreal Engine 5's Control Rig, a built-in suite of animation tools that lets you rig and animate models directly in the engine. According to the developer, the system was set up in such a way that the entire body of the catfish undulates in response to the movement of the head, allowing for realistic and incredibly fluid movements:

Previously, Mamoru also impressed us with a stunning animation of an enormous snake slithering through a swamp and coiling around itself, as well as an eerie sequence of the same snake appearing from under the water:

And here are some of the developer's most recent showcases offering a look at Otoshi no Shima, a WIP, UE5-powered indie exploration game inspired by the folklore of Japan's Tohoku region:
