Samsung Banned Use of ChatGPT-Like AI Tools for Staff After Data Leak

Employees shouldn't use the tools on work devices.

When ChatGPT leaked important information in March, it raised serious concerns about security: Italy even temporarily banned the chatbot, saying there was no reason for it to collect some information.

Now, a similar situation occurred in Samsung. According to Bloomberg, the company told its employees not to use AI tools like ChatGPT on company-owned devices while Samsung works to “create a secure environment” for them.

“HQ is reviewing security measures to create a secure environment for safely using generative AI to enhance employees’ productivity and efficiency,” said the company’s internal memo. “However, until these measures are prepared, we are temporarily restricting the use of generative AI.”

Bloomberg says the ban comes after some of Samsung's staff “leaked internal source code by uploading it to ChatGPT.”

This is not the first company to ban generative AI tools. JPMorgan has restricted its use over compliance concerns together with Bank of America, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, and Wells Fargo (via The Verge).

It seems like Samsung will bring such AI solutions back but will develop them internally. Bloomberg notes that it’s working on tools to help with translation, summarizing documents, and software development.
