Sea of Thieves Will Receive a Live-Action Adaptation Produced by Spider-Man: Brand New Day Director
Absolute piracy.
Rare, Xbox Game Studios
Pirates will come to the screen in a live-action adaptation of Rare and Xbox Game Studios' pirate adventure Sea of Thieves, as announced at the Xbox Showcase and reported by Entertainment Weekly.
The film will be produced by Marvel filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, known for directing Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, through his company Hisako Films. Cretton will not be taking the director's chair this time; who will helm the film remains unknown.
Matt Booty, Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer at Xbox, addressed the unique challenge of adapting a game with no single protagonist:
"The main character of a Sea of Thieves game is actually the player and the community," Booty says. "So if you sit down to think about Sea of Thieves, it's not, Who are the main characters? What's the plot? It's a super social game, but there's a tone to Sea of Thieves. It's built on a very cooperative community, so you can start to sense what that's going to be like."

Xbox currently has numerous film and TV adaptations in development, including a Gears of War live-action movie and animated series at Netflix, a Minecraft Movie sequel at Warner Bros., and an allegedly in-development Wolfenstein live-action TV show at Amazon.

Sea of Thieves, originally released in 2018 on PC and Xbox, and expanding to PlayStation 5 in 2024, became an audience favorite, with players praising the beautiful sea environments, sailing mechanics, and the freedom it gives players to create their own adventures.
