See the Reference DreamWorks Used to Animate Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Justin Weg showcased Big Jack Horner's demise from another angle.

While DreamWorks' Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is filled to the brim with iconic moments that solidified the acclaimed spin-off as one of the studio's greatest movies, one of its most memorable scenes is, without a doubt, the demise of Big Jack Horner, a puppy-kicking, pie-fingering, magical-objects-hoarding antagonist whom many describe as a breath of fresh air as far as modern cartoon villains are concerned.

Recently, Justin Weg, an expert in 3D animation and former Senior Animator at DreamWorks, showcased this scene from another perspective by demonstrating the self-made animation references it's based on. Just as he did for the inner peace promo video for Kung Fu Panda 4, Weg stepped into the shoes of an actor, portraying various characters, including Jack himself, to translate the real-life footage into 3D animation with impressive accuracy. Besides being mighty useful, some of the artist's custom refs look incredibly hilarious, providing just as much entertainment to the viewer as the movie itself.

"I LOVE acting out my reference to really get into character for my shots," Justin notes. "It really helps me understand what the character is going through and feeling at that moment. It's so fun to play around with!"

Previously, multiple other DreamWorks Animators also unveiled similar videos they prepared for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, including the legendary panic attack scene:
