Sega Says It Considers Adopting the $70 Price Point for Its Games

The Japanese publisher is currently exploring the possibility of increasing its prices.

Sega has hinted at the possibility of joining other game publishers in increasing the base price of its top-tier games to $70.

In its recent earnings report, Sega announced that it is actively assessing its game lineup to determine suitable areas for price adjustments, aligning itself with the likes of 2K Games, Square Enix, and other major companies that have already embraced $70 as the prevailing price for their major video games.

"In the global marketplace, AAA game titles for console have been sold at $59.99 for many years, but titles sold at $69.99 have appeared in the last year," Sega stated in a newly translated transcript of the company’s April 28 earnings call (via VGC).

"We would like to review the prices of titles that we believe are commensurate with price increases, while also keeping an eye on market conditions."

The transition from $60 to $70 for AAA game prices has been steadily taking place, starting with Take-Two Interactive's decision to increase the price of NBA 2K21 for its PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release.

Other prominent industry players such as EA, Sony, Activision, Square Enix, Ubisoft, and Microsoft later followed suit by raising prices for their games. Even Nintendo has acknowledged the shift, stating that it will determine the pricing of its games on a "case by case basis," as evidenced by its recent blockbuster release, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, being sold at the higher price point of $70.

In the meantime, Sega's recent major releases, such as Like a Dragon: Ishin (a remake of the 2014 game) and Sonic Frontiers, have been priced at $60. However, it is likely that the upcoming mainline Yakuza game, Like a Dragon 8, as well as any potential sequels to Sonic Frontiers, will be launched at a price point of $70. It remains uncertain whether spinoffs like Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name will also experience a price increase.
