SEGA Thinks Sonic Can Become More Popular Than Mario

The company believes Sonic has the potential to become one of the main heroes and surpass Mario.

In a new interview, a SEGA representative shared they believe that Sonic can still become more popular than Mario. SEGA executive Osamu Ohashi, who leads the Sonic division, thinks the character has all it takes to surpass Mario in popularity.

He noted that Sonic was created as a competitor to Mario but has not yet achieved a similar level of fame. While SEGA respects Nintendo's character, Ohashi's team wants Sonic to eventually surpass Mario. Ohashi did not specify though how his team plans to make Sonic more popular than Mario.
"Simply put, we want to surpass Mario,” Ohashi noted. "Sonic is a game that was originally developed to compete with Mario, and it still hasn’t achieved that goal. Because we respect Mario, our goal is to catch up and surpass him."

The Mario game series has sold over 830 million copies in total, making it one of the best-selling franchises in the history of the gaming industry. The animated film Super Mario Bros. Movie also became one of the highest-grossing releases of 2023, so SEGA still has a long way to go.

In other news, Masahiro Sakurai has recently expressed admiration for both Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, describing the games as masterpieces after playing through them.
