Shuhei Yoshida Shares His Thoughts on the Steam Machine

The former PlayStation boss has appreciated the experience of bringing Steam games to the living room but expressed doubts about the price.

Shuhei Yoshida, a renowned game developer and PlayStation veteran, has tested the Steam Machine and shared his thoughts.

Yoshida summarized his impressions in an X/Twitter post. The developer appreciated the device's core purpose, the ability to play Steam games in the living room, and called it "reason enough to keep it." He also praised the easy-to-use UI, the ability to boot up by pressing a button on the Steam Controller, which he called a "killer feature," as well as the changeable face plate and random boot-up videos.

On the other hand, the developer noted some drawbacks, pointing to the 3D performance and 1080p resolution, comparing the latter to the PS4 era. He also highlighted the price as a concern, calling it "very unfriendly," making it "hard to recommend to people unless for research."

Valve's new gaming device is a SteamOS-powered PC, which is specifically designed to bring a player's existing Steam library to the TV without requiring a Windows desktop, mouse, keyboard, or conventional gaming rig setup for most games. The 512GB model of Valve's new console-style PC box is priced at $1,049, with the 2TB version available for $1,349. Bundle options that include the new Steam Controller bring the prices to $1,128 and $1,428, respectively.
