The initiative being heard by the European Commission is now nearly guaranteed.
Following the Stop Killing Games petition reaching 1.45 million signatures and gaining enough prominence and momentum that even its creator, YouTuber Ross Scott, felt comfortable stepping back to his old content, only one major question remained – would those 1.45 million be enough, or was the counter-effort strong enough that even an extra 450,000 signatures wouldn't secure the required one million valid ones?
Fortunately for the team and the hundreds of thousands of gamers supporting them, it turned out that the nearly-half-a-million wiggle room wasn't even particularly necessary, with early counting showing the initiative is now all but guaranteed to reach the floor of the European Commission.
According to the official announcement shared by the team over on Reddit, the petition has now entered the verification period, with early signature checks from several countries determining around 97% of signatures as valid. Please note that this figure only reflects the initial reviews, not the total pool of 1.45 million signatures – in other words, it would be inaccurate to claim that 97% of all SKG signatures are confirmed – but still, if the rate holds near that level, reaching the required one million valid signatures will be no problem.
The review process is expected to take about three months, and once complete, the petition will be delivered to the European Commission, marking the start of the legislative phase in which the Commission and Parliament must decide how to respond. The team notes they are "preparing to ensure our initiative cannot be ignored," taking such steps as legislative outreach to Parliament and Commission members, countering misinformation and industry lobbying, and strengthening community structures to support the next stage.
"Some of this work must remain behind the scenes for now – past attempts to undermine the initiative have shown us the risks of being too open. But rest assured: important groundwork is being laid," the SKG team says. "We want to keep you engaged and involved. In the weeks ahead, expect more frequent updates through our media channels and partner creators."
Previously, Stop Killing Games received backing from Nicolae "Nicu" Ștefănuță, one of the fourteen Vice Presidents of the current EU Parliament, who voiced his support and confirmed that he had signed the petition himself. "I stand with the people who started this citizen initiative," he wrote. "I signed and will continue to help them. A game, once sold, belongs to the customer, not the company."
