Simulate Physics Right In Substance 3D Designer With This Tool

Pile your own 3D models using realistic physics and turn them into seamless, tileable textures.

Gilad Baruch, whose edge decal generator for Blender we featured previously, has released a new tool called Physics Scatter. It's neither for Blender nor Houdini, as you might expect: it lets you pile up your own meshes using real rigid-body simulations and bake the results into tileable material maps, all directly inside Substance 3D Designer.

You can use it for piles of skulls, bones, stones, batteries, screws, shells, or debris. It's all real physics: objects naturally collide, roll, and settle against each other. The tool supports custom meshes and mixed object types and produces tileable material maps up to 8K. Scatter objects across height maps using masks, adjust ground angles, and add per-object variations in color and roughness, while quickly updating textures or resolution without having to simulate the pile again.

To use Physics Scatter, simply add the node to a Substance 3D Designer graph, import your OBJ or FBX meshes, and customize their appearance. The objects then fall and settle naturally in the 3D preview, after which you can bake the results into maps such as Height, Normal, Base Color, Roughness, Metallic, Coverage Mask, Object ID, and Object Random. The simulation and baking are handled by Jolt Physics.

Physics Scatter offers several license options, from Personal to Enterprise, all available as one-time purchases that include commercial use and client work.

The tool requires Adobe Substance 3D Designer 14 or later and Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) to run. It also includes extensive documentation.
