Solve Puzzles & Survive Horrors in a Small, Twin Peaks-Like Town – Silver Pines is Out

In this survival horror Metroidvania, you become a private investigator trying to solve the vanishing of a local musician.

Silver Pines is a survival horror Metroidvania, where you solve puzzles and fight horrifying creatures in a small, half-abandoned American town. You take on the role of a private investigator who is on a mission to solve the mysterious disappearance of Eddy Velvet, a local musician.

Silver Pines' moody environments filled with despair are evocative of the dark world of the Silent Hill games. Nicknamed "a love letter to classic survival horror" by its developers, Silver Pines has everything we love about exploration horror. It's a story-rich, hand-drawn game where you get to both fight terrifying monsters in intense close combat and take a pause to solve mind-bending puzzles.

In the game, you have a limited inventory, where you keep all your weapons and medicine to recover from violent battles against Silver Pines' bizarre inhabitants. As you make your way through the doomed town, you'll discover more resources to aid you on this journey. There are hidden paths and mysterious locked doors everywhere around you, and to access them, you'll need better tools.

What makes the world of Silver Pines even more chilling is that the developers used real-life references to build this eerie gray town full of evil. To keep the players on their toes, they used varying lighting and color grading across the game scenes, enhancing the mysterious, unsettling look. If you want to know more about the creative processes behind the game, read our interview with Silver Pines' developers.

After 4 years in development, Silver Pines is officially out. The game gathered an overwhelming wave of positive reviews from industry critics, which is not very common for a title like this.

The Guardian praised its "brilliant sense of style, its considered pace, and its wonderfully constructed mythology." CGMagazine wrote that the game's "backtracking never feels bad; it feels like you are following up on a lead." DualShockers rated it a 9.5/10, adding "solving some puzzles occasionally required a substantial amount of running around, but Silver Pines itself is so mesmerizing to look at that I honestly didn't mind taking those laps."

Steam users are praising the game as well, noting that it feels like a mix of Resident Evil, Alan Wake, and Silent Hill with a dash of The X-Files and Twin Peaks.
