Stop-Motion-Like Animation with Original Characters Made with Houdini

3D Artist Chan, also known as twomothersuns, explained how they created the artwork.

3D Artist Chan, also known as twomothersuns, unveiled this appealing animation featuring adorable ethnic-style characters with high-quality rendering and a stop-motion animation effect.

This short scene depicts the first meeting of the original characters, Nuri and Eri, along with a cute creature named Saja. The major part of the workflow, comprising modeling, rigging, animating, and simulation, was completed in Houdini. Rendering was made using Karma, and for texturing, the artist used Substance 3D Painter.

As for the stop-motion, the creator drew inspiration from the works of Jiří Trnka, a Czechoslovak illustrator, puppet-maker, motion-picture animator, and film director, pointing out that they helped in texturing details to match puppet/doll looks. The technical process of making the effect involved, first, animating the characters in a regular way, and then adding noise to the rigs so that each joint moves slightly every specified number of frames, with rendering every nth frame to reduce render time.
