Stylized Interactive Water Simulation With Fish Made In Unity

MagicStones23 shared the progress of their game.

This very chill and satisfying demo, where you row around in a pond with interactive water and fish created using compute shaders, is actually part of a Unity game by Reddit user MagicStones23, said to be focused on adventure and exploration.

The artist revealed that they were inspired by a GDC talk from the ABZU team, likely referencing Matt Nava's presentation, providing insights into the game's unique art style and the technology used by Giant Squid to bring it to life:

MagicStones23 also shared some details on how they created the boat's interactive water wake. They explained that they utilize a wave function method, which involves a water displacement map (a render texture). For each frame, they input positions like the bow and paddle into a compute shader, which updates the displacement map. The compute shader primarily handles the wave function, and then the updated displacement map is passed to the water shader. Normals are also generated from the displacement map to enhance the effect.
