Taking a Real-Life Hobby into Digital Spaces: Mituhashi Made a VRChat Glass Cutting Experience
Edo Kiriko enthusiast and 3D artist Mituhashi launched their VRChat experience that allows you to try traditional Japanese glass-cutting art.
Mituhashi, a 3D artist who creates Edo Kiriko as a hobby, launched their VRChat experience, Mituhashi Glass Crafts. Edo Kiriko is a traditional Japanese craft of cutting glass that originated in the 19th century. Craftsmen use an abrasive wheel to create patterns, typically on colored glass, to achieve the visual contrast between the untouched glass and the areas where they cut it.
In Mituhashi's VRChat experience, you can try a digital version of Edo Kiriko. It features a rotating glass cutter that allows you to make realistic cuts on both straight glass sheets and complex glass objects like vases and wine glasses. You can pick colored glass, too, and the areas you make the cuts in will turn transparent, just like in a real-life Edo Kiriko piece.
To create this experience, the artist used Unity and added glassware assets by RARAlabo to simulate pouring liquid from the pitcher into the glasses. In Mituhashi Glass Crafts, you can pick a glass shape you like, adjust wheel settings like cutting angle and cutting depth, and turn on cut assist and guides for a more precise result.
Mituhashi Glass Crafts is a VRChat world where you can save and share your glass-cutting pieces. You can export them as code or "import them into a Kiriko generator for Unity, export them as 3D objects, and display them in your own world," the author explains. You can check it out here.
