The Callisto Protocol Will Unlikely Launch on Game Pass in Near Future

Striking Distance Studios shared that it may consider adding The Callisto Protocol to Xbox Game Pass but feels that Game Pass's financial model is "difficult" for independent studios with single-player games.

It seems that The Callisto Protocol, the upcoming single-player horror video game developed by Striking Distance Studios and created by the talent behind Dead Space, will unlikely appear in Xbox Games Pass subscription.

Speaking to TrueAchievements, Striking Distance Studios' chief technology officer Mark James shared that the model Game Pass offers is a "difficult" one in terms of finances for independent studios that release single-player games.

While saying that the team will "think about" adding The Callisto Protocol to the subscription service, James also noted that services like Game Pass are built mostly for "open-world style and repetitive multiplayer games" which, according to him, "survive well" there.

He also added that although there are single-players on Game Pass, they are mostly released by Microsoft's first-party studios but for smaller developers, Game Pass's financial model isn't the most profitable scenario.

"Microsoft has their own single-player games within the service, and I still think you're going to see the platform holder studios provide single-player games in them; I'm just saying [that] as a financial model, it's a difficult one to make work as an independent studio," he said.

James, however, said that his words don't mean that The Callisto Protocol will never make its way onto a subscription service like Game Pass.

"As an independent, third-party, it's really hard to make a linear third-person game work within those services. I'm not saying never; it's hard financially to make that work," he concluded.

Probably, there is still a chance that the game will be added to Xbox Game Pass as, in an interview with GeneracionXbox, Striking Distance CEO Glen Schofield, stated that his studio has talked with Xbox regarding this matter.

Schofield shared that Striking Distance has a good relationship with Phil Spencer and Xbox and already discussed the possibility of bringing The Callisto Protocol to Game Pass, however, he said that the game needs "time in the market" before putting it on a subscription service.
