The Day Before Developer Shuts Down, Makes the Game Unbuyable on Steam

The game's publisher, Mytona, is offering refunds for all players, even with 2+ hours spent in the game.

Less than a week after the release of The Day Before, the infamous multiplayer survival game released on December 7 to Overwhelmingly Negative reviews on Steam and an astonishing 0.4 rating on Metacritic, the game's developer, Fntastic, made an announcement saying that the studio is shutting down due to financial constraints.

Shared via the team's official Twitter page, the announcement states that The Day Before not only failed as a piece of entertainment but also financially, with all generated income being directed towards clearing the studio's debt. The studio added that throughout the development process, they didn't take any money from the audience, nor did they conduct any pre-order or crowdfunding campaigns. Despite the studio's closure, Fntastic assured that the game's servers would remain operational, leaving the fate of The Day Before uncertain.

"The Day Before has failed financially, and we lack the funds to continue," reads the announcement. "All income received is being used to pay off debts to our partners.

We invested all our efforts, resources, and man-hours into the development of The Day Before, which was our first huge game. We really wanted to release new patches to reveal the full potential of the game, but unfortunately, we don't have the funding to continue the work.

We apologize if we didn't meet your expectations. We did everything within our power, but unfortunately, we miscalculated our capabilities. Creating games is an incredibly challenging endeavor."

Shortly after the announcement, the team made the game unavailable to buy on Steam, without actually disabling its Steam page, effectively limiting access to the game to those who already own it. Said list of owners, however, is getting shorter and shorter by the hour, as according to statistics shared by Simon Carless, the game has an astounding refund rate of 46%, with 91,700 copies out of 201,000 sales being refunded.

To their credit, the game's publisher and investor, Mytona, is actively collaborating with Steam to guarantee that all players can receive a refund, regardless of the duration of time spent playing the game.

"As the investor of The Day Before we would like to provide some updates on the current situation around the game," commented the publisher. "We are sorry for the fact that the game didn't meet the expectations of the majority of the players. Today we will work with Steam to open up refunds for any players who choose to make a refund. We are in contact with Fntastic regarding the future of the game."
