The Entire GTA V Map Recreated with a 3D Printer

The project took 400+ hours to complete.

A Product Designer Dom Riccobene has created a miniature replica of the entire Grand Theft Auto V map using a 3D printer. The project took him over 400 hours to complete. Riccobene commented that it was probably the most enjoyable and technically challenging project he has ever worked on.

The map itself was created in a series of 24 individual tiles before being assembled into its final form. Riccobene used the Original Prusa i3 MK3S+ 3D printer to accomplish the task.

“To start, I used a custom script to scan the terrain and buildings in RDR2 first. Then I managed to port it for use in GTA V. It runs in-game and collects ground elevations in a 500-1000 meter radius around the player when you press a hotkey adding up to 1,000,000+ data points per scan," Riccobene told Kotaku. "The next challenge was merging the point clouds and turning the dataset into real-world data so I could manipulate, process, and analyze it with professional mapping and cartography software,”

This map, however, is not Riccobene's first Rockstar-related project. Last year, he recreated a map from Red Dead Redemption 2. For that project, the maestro used 250 screenshots stitched together as part of a photographic modeling process called “photogrammetry” to create a 10K image that was later used in the project.
