The Game Kitchen on Creating Original Blasphemous

The developers shared the challenges of the Metroidvania.

The creators of Blasphemous, The Game Kitchen, have summarized their developing journey in a video documentary, where they talked about the Metroidvania's production, its challenges, and joys.

"The Game Kitchen came out of the transformation of an amateur group of developers that began years earlier when we were just a group of friends all working on different things, none of which had anything to do with video games. And then one day we said, 'Hey, this isn't fulfilling. What I want to do is make games.'" 

This is how the team started to pave its way to what would become its breakthrough project. The Game Kitchen saw plenty of people come and go while it was working on The Last Door, a psychological horror adventure that came before Blasphemous, as it didn't have the funds to pay good salaries.

There was always a chance the team would disband due to all the hardships it was facing, but it eventually managed to collect enough money through crowdfunding to bring Blasphemous to life.

"We launched the Kickstarter campaign in secret half an hour before so that friends and family could become backers before the public at large came in. And as soon as I refreshed the page, there was already $500. Exactly 24 hours later, we reached the goal of $50,000. And after 48 hours, we'd almost doubled that. That was the most money a Spanish videogame had ever raised on that platform. It destroyed all the plans that we had for the campaign."
