The New South Park Game Doesn't Feel Like South Park At All, Critics Say

"Despite being occasionally funny, the game is never fun."

Ahead of its release today, on March 26, the first reviews on the highly-anticipated South Park: Snow Day! have arrived, and they aren't as pleasant as one might have expected.

South Park: Snow Day, an action-adventure RPG developed by Question, promises to bring the next chapter full of humor and personality to the journey of the New Kid, but for now, it seems that it delivers toothless gameplay and a whole step in a wrong direction, as some critics say.

Speaking numbers, on Metacritic, the game can boast a score of 61 points from critics, which is labeled as "mixed or average". Here are some of the reviews:

"What's unforgivable is that, at its core, South Park: Snow Day! isn't remotely fun to play. Its combat and progression systems aren’t engaging, and only the most hardcore of South Park fans will find a glimmer of hope in the bulletproof humour that's borrowed from the cartoon," reads a comment from GGRecon.

"Aggravating hack-and-slash combat and surprisingly sparse jokes make South Park: Snow Day! dull, toothless, and a big step in the wrong direction for South Park games," stated IGN on OpenCritic.

"Despite being occasionally funny, the game is never fun," says Slant Magazine.

The action-adventure game also achieved a score of 62 out of 100 on OpenCritic, from 32 reviews, with only 26% of journalists recommending it for completion.

Reviewers largely agreed that the game developed by Question and published by THQ Nordic lacked excitement in terms of gameplay. While some initially found the gameplay to be simple yet engaging, many felt that it grew tediously monotonous as the game progressed.

Here are some of the cons mentioned by critics: monotonous gameplay that loses appeal in the latter half; awkward and unresponsive controls, occasional camera issues; boring visual design; shallow roguelike mechanics; ineffectual AI teammates; numerous bugs; the game fails to capture the essence of South Park.

Today, the game is set to release, so let's wait and see what players have to say about it.
