The Programmer On the Original SNES Star Fox Is Making His Own Game

Meet the spiritual successor to the legendary rail shooter franchise.

If you enjoyed the Star Fox series, take a look at this upcoming on-rails shooter from one of the developers of the original game – Wild Blue Skies, created by Chuhai Labs and Vitei Backroom, and published by Balor Games.

Giles Goddard, one of the creators of the original 1993 Star Fox game, founded Japanese studio Vitei in 2002, which later rebranded its Vitei Backroom division as Chuhai Labs in 2020 to expand into micro-publishing.

Wild Blue Skies might be considered a spiritual successor to the Star Fox series, reimagining the classic on-rail adventures of the '90s. The new game follows the story of Bowie Stray and the Blue Bombers, soaring through the skies on a world-saving mission. The hand-crafted, anime-style universe will welcome both newcomers and genre veterans.

The classic on-rails shooter action is complemented by modernized controls, evoking nostalgic vibes with a fresh twist. Wild Blue Skies features branching paths, boss battles, dogfights against a rival squad, and a score system for players looking to master each mission.

Before, we had a chance to talk to Balor Games about their acquisition of the Humble Games catalog and their approach to choosing indie projects for their portfolio, so if you are interested, make sure to check the interview.

Goddard is not the only veteran developer channeling his expertise into something new. Grand Theft Auto developer Obbe Vermeij and Fable creator Peter Molyneux are also each working on their own new titles – Plentiful and Masters of Albion, respectively.
