Take a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Masters of Albion, Fable Creator's Upcoming God Game

Peter Molyneux, Mark Healey, and Russ Shaw shared their thoughts on the game's creative direction, world-building, and their approach to breathing new life into the genre.

The developers of Masters of Albion, an upcoming strategy game offering a fresh take on the God genre, shared a behind-the-scenes look at the project, discussing their approach to concept, mechanics, and music.

The game is developed by 22cans studio, founded by Peter Molyneux, the legendary video game designer with over 40 years of experience and creator of classic titles such as the Fable series, Godus, Theme Park, and Dungeon Keeper. In the talk, Molyneux, together with Mark Healey, Art Director, and Russ Shaw, Audio Director, covered the game's vision and creative process.

The creators started by sharing their thoughts on the God genre. "For me, the god game is about freedom. It's about freedom to approach the world in any way you want," Molyneux said.

Mark Healey added that in the games of such a genre, a player can "tinker with things and change settings" in the game's world. "If you want to rip a tree out of the ground, you can do it. If you want to change the weather, you can do it and see how that affects the ecosystem of everything," Russ Shaw clarified.

The audio director continued, recalling discussing the concept of Masters of Albion with Peter Molyneux and saying that he wanted the new game to be a "mixture of all the previous games we'd ever worked on." According to Shaw, Dungeon Keeper, Fable, and Black & White heavily inspired the title, and thus, Masters of Albion is a "legacy-type game."

Peter Molyneux continued, saying that the God game is a "withering" genre of game, "a small percentage of that pie chart of all games that people play," which is "incredibly sad," according to the creator.

"And if we're going to reinvigorate it, then there has to be something special. There has to be something new. There has to be something fresh and innovational about what we present to the player. And that's what I believe Masters of Albian is," Molyneux concluded.

Art director Mark Healey shared that he specifically focused on showing how miniature the game characters were. "I like the idea of it almost feeling like a sort of Warhammer-style miniature or something that's on a table that's animating," he said. The developer also shared an interesting thought that might apply to many art spheres, not only gamedev: "Creativity in general tends to be born from restrictions."

Russ Shaw then proceeded with detailing his approach to creating the music and sounds. According to the developer, he first creates the ambient base for the world, such as the sounds of birds, countryside, and rivers and streams – "everything that makes the world come to life," which is then accompanied by script-based music that guides the player through the story. Making that transition and blending them poses the biggest challenge, as Shaw said.

Reflecting on the challenges of game development, Peter Molyneux pointed out that the most dangerous resource a team can run out of is not money, but motivation: "And there is one resource that trumps everything else. And that resource is not money. It's boredom. If you develop a game for too long, the team that you're working with just gets bored with it. And no one is creative when they're bored."

The creator also noted that you need to relax players, and thus, a game shouldn't be "button-twitchy" all the time. "One of the big my big motivations is to give everyone at 22cans the experience of releasing a game that brings joy," Molyneux revealed.

Masters of Albion mixes strategy, simulation, town management, and tower defence, alongside a rich narrative layer. Players will take on the role of a god, shaping towns and guiding their citizens, or diving into the world firsthand by stepping into the lives of its characters.

The game is set to release on April 22. Watch the full talk with the game's creators here and wishlist Masters of Albion on Steam.
