These Advent Calendars Are Secretly Solo RPGs
I like the horror one.
Black Armada's Advent Adventures are two solo journaling games disguised as advent calendars, each with 25 perforated doors, each hiding a prompt that builds toward a story by the end.
The games are Advent of Adventure, which is about a dragon that has invaded the North Pole and has nested on a pile of undelivered presents, and Advent of Abomination, which depicts a darker story about your character spending the Christmas season alone in a remote cabin in the forest.
Black Armada Games is the studio behind Lovecraftesque, Flotsam: Adrift Amongst the Stars, and Wreck This Deck. And this isn't the first time they've tried this format; a few years ago, the studio released the first version of Advent of Abomination, but cutting the doors with a craft knife was a little bit messy.
This time, they decided to look for crowdfunding on Kickstarter to get a print run and be able to use a machine to cut all the doors in the calendars. Their goal was to reach £1,600/USD$2,154, but luckily they have reached £3,055/USD$4,113 with 120 sponsors.
The creators explained that the campaign started in July because that way they could guarantee the calendars would be printed and shipped before December. If you, or someone you know, likes advent calendars and Christmas stories, this could be a nice gift.
You can still back the project to get one or both games here.
