This Alien Rig Is Creepy but Very Nicely Detailed

Robin Berger offers the rig for free.

Rigging artist Robin Berger showcased an extremely bendy alien rig made in Maya – creepy but super flexible. Almost every part of its body – even the vertebrae! – can move in many directions.

Created in collaboration with Niklas Schulte Osthoff, the rig will be free once it's finished. For now, here are some details from Berger.

"For the extending jaw, I went with a joint-based setup to give animators maximum flexibility — even after the jaw is fully extended. The spine wave runs on a MEL expression with user-friendly, keyable attributes like wavelength, offset, and envelope — giving you full control over the motion. The dynamic tails are driven by mGear’s Spring Solver for natural, secondary motion."

The creator will soon share the rig on his Gumroad and will be showing more breakdowns over the next few weeks, so follow him on LinkedIn to not miss them.
