This Moving 3D Chess Cube Would Take Crazy Skill to Play

A beautiful wind-up machine by Martin Crownover.

You think normal chess is hard? Then grab your seat: 3D artist Martin Crownover made it even harder with his wind-up mechanical chess box that allows you to move only on the top surface and at the same time think about what you can do when the figures move to the side.

"I had been wanting to model a full chess set in Blender for a while, but couldn't think of anything interesting to do with it until this idea popped into my head. Modeling the wooden carving was a fun twist to the project. It was also challenging to figure out the best way to get the pieces to move across the board as the board moved under them."

All the materials are procedural, and I could totally see this box becoming a fine companion to 4D chess.

Seasoned chess players will notice some less logical moves, but Crownover says it was the sacrifice to keep the animation going, and initially, the moves were not even in order, "but I knew it would bug people so I started over."

Here are some other projects by him, which you can find on Reddit.
