This New 2D Animation & Drawing App Deserves Your Attention
If you grew up with Adobe Flash, you'll probably like Umoupen.
Recently, we've seen quite a few promising tools for 2D Artists emerge from passionate indie developers: if you haven't checked them out yet, take a look at Kala Paint and Callipeg. Umoupen seems to be joining that lineup, as the app has been attracting more attention lately.
It offers many of the features you'd expect from popular 2D animation apps, and it's said to take inspiration from Macromedia Flash/Adobe Flash. It's a bit of a Frankenstein-style app, though. On the drawing side, you can work with both raster brushes and editable vector strokes. You get brushes, pens, erasers, transform tools, color palettes, and more.
For animation, Umoupen supports both frame-by-frame drawing and tweening. It also includes handy production features, including built-in storyboarding and shot sequencing, plus a timesheet with annotations. It supports 3D model import and even online drawing with friends. Everything syncs live, and you can invite collaborators using a six-character code or make your session public so others can find and join.
That's only scratching the surface of what Umoupen can do, and the app is available at a pretty affordable price. It's also a one-time purchase, not a subscription. You can activate your license on up to three devices at once. For now, you can get Umoupen on desktop, with support for both macOS and Windows. iPad and Android versions are also planned for the future.
The developer strongly emphasizes that Umoupen isn't a product of vibe coding, it's been in development for many years.
