This Real-Life Low-Resolution Interior Design Decor Turns Any Space into a Retro Game Scene

French-Polish designer from the Netherlands, Jonas Hejduk, makes low-poly assets for the real world.

Jonas Hejduk

Jonas Hejduk's low-resolution art is a response to Silicon Valley's obsession with all things UHD. In a world where 1080p is basically considered medium quality now, with 8K videos flooding the digital space, the artist questions what technological progress even means with these real-life low-poly objects.

The concept behind the low-resolution objects is that "a strange meteorite crashes to Earth, mysteriously lowering the resolution of the images and objects surrounding it." In Hejduk's own words, the adorably awkward, blurry objects are more than a taste of nostalgia – they're "a symbolic alternative to an invisible mass consumption of which we are all actors."

The artist creates his low-res pieces using tangible, real-life materials. The rug is woven wool and cotton, the log pile is paper and 3D prints, and the log bench is birch wood, HR foam, printed upholstery fabric, and nails.

The first low-poly objects were designed as part of crash.jpeg, a low-resolution collection that opposes the crispness of high-resolution flawlessness. Each of these pieces was deliberately crafted to be difficult to photograph, tricking the eye into thinking they became victims of excruciatingly long loading times. When making the low-resolution assets come to life, Hejduk drew inspiration from video game culture and traditional craftsmanship.

While in a digital world, objects that look like this are usually deemed unusable, the beautiful irony of Hejduk's creations is that they're fully functional and can be utilized.
