This Startup's Device Will Get Things Done for You

r1 uses rabbit's large action model to provide an app-free online experience.

Smartphones get more and more complicated every year, and it can become hard to understand what's where for what and how to use it all. So, AI startup rabbit came up with a consumer AI device called r1, running on a "revolutionary" natural-language operating system.

"r1 was developed to take a leap towards an app-free online experience, by introducing an operating system that navigates all of your apps quickly and efficiently so you don’t have to."

We're used to large language models (LLMs) by now, but the company has introduced its own so-called large action model (LAM), which powers r1’s operating system, rabbit OS, and models human actions on computer interfaces by learning users’ intention and behavior.

“Today is the beginning of a new era in human-machine interaction,” said rabbit Founder and CEO Jesse Lyu. “We’ve come to a point where we have hundreds of apps on our smartphones with complicated UX designs that don’t talk to each other. As a result, end users are frustrated with their devices and are often getting lost. rabbit is now building towards an intuitive app-free experience with the power of AI. Large Language Models, like ChatGPT, showed the possibility of understanding natural language with AI; our Large Action Model takes it one step further: it doesn’t just generate text in response to human input – it generates actions on behalf of users to help us get things done.”

This LAM is designed to make AI systems see and act in the same way humans do, removing the need to download and use multiple apps and APIs. The company promises that you'll be able to, for example, book tickets without touching any apps.

r1 has a touchscreen, a push-to-talk button, an analog scroll wheel, a microphone, speakers, and a 360-degree rotational camera. There are also Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and SIM card slots that support a 4G LTE network. You can tell it what you want to achieve, and the device will do it for you, a lot like ChatGPT but faster. For example, you can ask r1 to play music, and it will as long as you have your Spotify account connected.

r1 is all about using technology intuitively. The price of this magic box is $199, you can already pre-order it and expect the device in late March 2024.
