Check out Stretchmancer a browser-based indie game with unique world-stretching mechanics.
In recent years, as non-Euclidean game environments have gained increasing popularity, game developers have introduced a plethora of innovative game mechanics that push the boundaries of the concept, requiring players to manipulate the game's levels themselves to move forward. A recent case in point comes from developers Ollie Powell, Adam Butcher, Tom Carrell, and Ezgi Hazal Aygan, who unveiled an absolutely incredible game that tasks the player to stretch their surroundings and warp the world around them in order to progress.
Meet Stretchmancer, a new browser-based Portal-style puzzle game that features unique world-stretching puzzles and five fun levels that will require you to think outside the box and stretch the world along the axis.
Powered by Unity, this game was developed in a mere 72 hours for Ludum Dare 54, a recent game jam that lasted from September 29 to October 2, 2023. Staying true to LD54's topic of "Limited Space", stretching a dimension along one axis causes the other dimensions to shrink. "There's always the same amount of space, but it's how you use it that counts," comments the team.
Following the game's release, the team also shared an insightful blog post discussing the development process behind the game and explaining how the stretching mechanic was set up in Unity. You can access the full breakdown by clicking this link.
