This Upcoming Add-On Adds a First-Person Controller to Blender

Damjan Minovski's WIP tool OmniStep now works with custom user scripts.

3D Artist and Developer Damjan Minovski returns after an eight-month hiatus to provide a long-awaited update on his soon-to-be-released Blender add-on, OmniStep, and showcase a cool new feature he recently added to the tool.

For those unfamiliar, Damjan's OmniStep is a first-person controller for Blender that enhances the software's built-in Fly/Walk navigation and adds numerous exciting features that make one reminisce about the good old pre-2.8 times when Blender still had its own game engine. Throughout 2023, Damjan regularly provided updates on the state of the add-on via a devlog, which abruptly ended in the Fall of last year, making one question whether OmniStep would ever see the light of day.

As it turned out, the project was not abandoned, and the developer has been hard at work improving OmniStep even further. In a recent demo, Damjan showcased the add-on's new functionality, revealing that it now works with custom user scripts and has a Unity-like UI inspector for variables, making it possible to set up simple games entirely in Blender.

To demonstrate the novel UserScripts feature in action, the creator set up a working Minecraft-style game prototype 100% with Blender, a feat that required only 79 lines of code. According to Damjan, he aims to ship the final version of OmniStep within a month.

"It can read and write values from and to the script, have overrides for the scene, and is populated automatically when pressing 'Read Parameters'," commented the author on the capabilities of the UI inspector.

We highly encourage you to follow Damjan on Twitter to check out more OmniStep demos and stay updated on the add-on's upcoming release.
