This War of Mine Joins the Permanent Collection At New York's Modern Art Museum

The game will be showcased in the Never Alone: Video Games and Other Interactive Design exhibit.

This War of Mine, the war survival video game from the Polish game developer 11 Bit Studios, has been added to the New York Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection, the studio announced.

The game will be featured at the exhibit Never Alone: Video Games and Other Interactive Design and will join other titles including classics like Tetris, Flower, and Pac-Man as well as non-gaming forms of interactive design such as the @ symbol. The exhibition will be available until July 23, 2022.

Commenting on the addition of the game to the museum's permanent collection, Paul Galloway, Collection Specialist for the Department of Architecture and Design at MoMA, noted that This War of Mine is a remarkable example of a game tackling heavy subjects. According to him, it falls into the category of games that demand more from players than just providing entertainment and a temporary escape from life's challenges.

"When I played This War of Mine it made me sad, it made me afraid, it made me very tense, and in the end, it left me with a very changed understanding of what it is to be playing in a war space," Galloway said.

This War of Mine was released in 2014. Set in the fictional city of Pogoren during a military conflict, the game follows a group of people struggling to survive by taking refuge in a ruined house.

This is not the first time when This War of Mine is featured in the exhibition – it is also displayed at the ongoing War Games exhibit at the Imperial War Museum in London. The game has also been included in the official reading list for schools in Poland.
