The list includes Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Recently, the Fallout co-creator, Tim Cain, published a video on his YouTube channel where the developer shared a list of the top five modern role-playing games that you can learn from and which will help you if you make RPGs. He emphasized that his list is not meant to be a definitive ranking of the best RPGs.
World of Warcraft, an MMO RPG, took the first spot in Cain's ranking. Cain praises the game for simplifying certain elements to enhance gameplay enjoyment, despite some drawbacks. "It did prove that if you make the games easier, they'll be more fun."

In second place is Elden Ring, known for its engaging complexity and lore, although it may take time to fully grasp its depth. The interface indicators showing effects on the main character were also praised.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim takes third place, praised as an "absolute masterclass" in terms of exploration. He also mentioned the quality of the art design and the variety of locations and shared that in his mind the game was always somewhat similar to playing the Dungeons & Dragons game.
"I've told many people that Skyrim is the closest that I've ever come to playing D&D on a computer the way it seems in my head when I'm playing the tabletop version," Cain said.

Rounding out the list are Fallout: New Vegas and Baldur's Gate 3. Cain says that both of them are good to learn from because these RPGs allow you to make different decisions as you progress through the storyline, and these decisions will influence the further development of events.
