Tips on Landing a Job in the Video Game Industry

Philip Liu has shared a comprehensive list of tips and tricks for aspiring Game Developers and Artists.

Philip Liu, an experienced Senior Material Artist and Creature Sculptor, who worked on such titles as God of War Ragnarök, Hogwarts Legacy, Middle Earth Shadow of War, and many others, has recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of being a part of the video game industry by sharing a comprehensive list of various tips and tricks for aspiring Game Developers and Artists willing to land a job in the industry.

In this list, Liu offered some general advice on surviving in the industry, explained the elements beginners should focus on and keep in mind in the first place, detailed the actions one should avoid, and more.

"I officially hit the big 10 today in years worked in the video game industry," commented the author. "Did a little digging and found my first offer letter. Reading it now reminded me how ordinary my starting point was. Reflecting back at many personal experiences I ended with a few takeaways. Again these are just reflections based on personal experiences and not a rule book for how the industry works."

Attached below are some of the tips shared by the artist, you can check out the full list by clicking this link:

  • Timing means a lot in landing a job and it is not something you can predict with 100% accuracy. The rest comes with a solid portfolio.
  • The industry changes fast. Just because the rules are what they are today does not mean they will be the same tomorrow.
  • Be okay with rejections. It sucks regardless of years worked in the industry, but it simply means it was not the right fit. If you are working hard and smart towards a goal, there is something better around the corner.
  • Invest in yourself. It's the best way to ensure longevity in this industry.
  • "Dream Projects" can turn sour really quickly, and projects that weren’t my first pick can end up amazing.
  • Ego and office politics will cause attrition like no other.
  • Learn how to argue well. There will be disagreements and it's important to firmly state your point but not come across and putting people down.
