Todd Howard Has Never Seen Such Increase in Daily Players as After Fallout Series

We're talking about 4-6 times more players than before.

Bethesda | Fallout 4

After Amazon's Fallout series launched in April, Fallout 76 quickly saw a new peak of 39,455 concurrent users on Steam, and it's not alone, it seems, because Betheda's Todd Howard revealed a fantastic surge of players that were attracted by the show.

According to him, the games received up to 6 times more daily players than before in under two months, and he'd never experienced anything like this.

“Depending on the ‘Fallout’ game, you’re looking at a 4-6x increase in daily players, which is beyond anything I’ve ever seen in my 30 years of doing this,” Howard told Variety. “Having an event that brings that many people into games that you have and who have never played your games before, that’s a big thing. New players who have never played a game or never played one of our games. It’s a really, really unique moment.”

As the outlet pointed out, the total number of concurrent players increased across Fallout Shelter, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Fallout 76, and Fallout 4, and the latter two are currently within the top 7 first-party Xbox Game Pass games by hours, together with Starfield and Skyrim. It says that daily active players surpassed 5 million, which is a jump of over 600% compared to the stats before the TV series.

“The one thing about TV that Jonah told me from day one is it’s about finding the characters. And I think it’s really awesome how these characters have resonated with the audience,” Howard said. “And so I think there’s still stories to tell there. There’s so many great characters — I love Norm and Chet, I love the two of them in every scene. And obviously we have the Ghoul and Lucy and Maximus. But there’s so many great characters that have a lot of stories left to tell.”

The curse of bad game adaptations is fading as Fallout follows successful examples of The Last of Us, Arcane, The Witcher, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

However, if you are a hardcore fan of the franchise, you might not be as happy as those who have never played the games. Some players were enraged by how the showrunners dealt with the events of Fallout: New Vegas. But the director of the show said his intention was not to please the fans.
