Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Will Have a "Modern Player" Difficulty

So, no more puzzles you can spend hours solving?

During The Game Awards 2025, a new Tomb Raider remake, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, was revealed, expected to come out in 2026, 30 years after the original. According to the announcement, the game is going to be a reimagination, honoring the essence of the original, but adding new things and featuring expanded storytelling.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is being developed by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog. "For our passionate longtime fans, it's a chance to re-experience the original Tomb Raider adventure with a new perspective. But for new players, it's an opportunity to experience a foundational gaming masterpiece with modernized gameplay while maintaining its original spirit," said Will Kerslake, Crystal Dynamics Game Director.

One thing that won't be maintained, however, is apparently the difficulty of the 1996 installment. When Kerslake was asked about the difficulty of the game, he said, "Part of reimagining a game right is adjusting that game evolving for modern player tastes," suggesting that the difficulty for the new one will be different – likely much easier than the original, if gallons of yellow paint and companions telling you how to solve a puzzle in modern AAA titles are anything to go by.

Will Kerslake also said that the game will still feature the elements players expect in a Tomb Raider installment, such as puzzles in combat, large rolling balls, and death-defying action. According to his words, the core of the game will still be there, and for those who played and enjoyed the 1996 version, the remake could feel like a tribute to it.
