Transforming 19th-Century Painting into Beautiful 3D Environment

Sierra Division was inspired by Christian Friedrich Mali's Wash Day Before a Small Town.

Sierra Division knows how to create gorgeous environments, and its new River Town: Laundry Day is a great example of the team's talent and expertise.

Inspired by Christian Friedrich Mali's Wash Day Before a Small Town, Sierra Division's Inka Sipola and Jacob Norris turned the 19th-century painting into a stunning 3D scene full of tiny details.

The environment, made with Blender, Unreal Engine, Substance 3D Painter, Marvelous Designer, and ZBrush, tells the story of the townsfolk in its tiny realistic assets.

"River Town includes a mix of hand created, sculpted, and textured assets, with modular building elements, overlaid with tessellated Megascans materials. Materials were altered and customized to capture the style and atmosphere of the original artwork."

Sierra Division notes that the washing brush was made using the Fur Shells technique "to make it feel as though each bristle of the brush exists in full 3D fashion."
