Turn Photos & 3D Renders into Paintings with This Blender Filter

Grab Supa Painter at a discounted price.

"A filter with a painter's hand," Supa Painter is a Blender add-on that transforms images and even 3D renders into painterly masterpieces.

It is "built the way painters actually work": the strokes follow the form, the colors shift when the brush reloads, and the brush paints with real thickness.

Supa Painter doesn't just slap a filter on top of your image, it allows you to see the process, decide if that's what you want, and stop where needed.

"The strokes land over your image as they are laid, big shapes first, then the detail – so you see what every setting does as it happens. If it looks right halfway through, press Enter: it stops there and finishes the painting as it stands," the developer, Quentin Pointillart, explains.

He also points out that Blender stays usable the whole time, in the Image Editor, the Shader Editor, and the Compositor.

There are multiple art visions you can use to get the perfect feeling for your work:

  • Oil — loaded ribbons of thick color that catch the light.
  • Oil 2 — the same thick paint, pulled into long blended strokes.
  • Impasto — paint troweled and sponged on, lit from a low angle.
  • Gouache — flat, opaque color laid down in clean shapes.
  • Gouache 2 — opaque color in many close shades, softly blended.
  • Gouache Expressive — loose calligraphic strokes with lively color.
  • Gouache Sketch — a rough study in a handful of flat colors.
  • Poster — bold blocks of color with the fuss stripped out.
  • Impressionism — short broken dabs of color that mix in the eye.
  • Impressionism Sketch — a fast color study in loose, scratchy marks.
  • Digital Painting — crisp, clean brushwork that keeps the detail.
  • Paint Filter — a painted surface that stays close to the photo.
  • Dry Brush — a scratchy, half-loaded brush dragged over grain.
  • Stipple — tone built up from thousands of small marks.
  • Sketch — soft raked strokes that suggest the form.
  • Rough Sketch — a quick mixed-brush study that keeps the detail.
  • Scratchy Sketchy — long gestural strokes, fast and restless.
  • Calligraphy — long confident strokes that taper at both ends.
  • Ink — hard edges, dense darks, nothing hesitant.
  • Watercolor — transparent washes, the paper left bare for the lights.

The tool has different functions depending on Blender's editors. In the Image Editor, it paints "anything you can open", including photos, renders, matte plates, and hand-painted maps. Watch it work, add your own brush shapes, and save the result as a preset.

In the Shader Editor, Supa Painter paints a material's entire PBR set, "recognizing what each texture is for and treating it accordingly, so nothing gets ruined by being painted like a picture when it isn't one." The strokes follow the geometry, UV seams and UDIM tiles are handled appropriately, and tileable textures repeat seamlessly.

In the Compositor, the add-on paints the rendered frame itself, and the shot's depth and normals tell the brush where the volumes are, allowing the strokes to wrap the forms in the image and not just glide across a flat picture. The tool paints with exposure and grade, not against them, and transparent renders "keep a painted edge instead of a giveaway CG silhouette."

Supa Painter is flexible with its 50 settings, 5 bundled brush sets, 20 presets, and the ability to make more from your own creations. Pointillart promises that it doesn't use AI to paint if this is a dealbreaker for you.
