Ubisoft Barcelona Employees May Be Laid Off Despite AC Black Flag Resynced's Success
The workers have gone on strike.
Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced has been a massive success – it sold 2 million copies and became the biggest Steam launch in the franchise's history, surpassing 99,000 concurrent players, all in a week after its launch.
The game features great graphics and underwater exploration. However, the developers at Ubisoft Barcelona who worked on the underwater scenes are said to have been laid off. Tech and Gameplay Animator at Ubisoft Barcelona Manel Cota said on X/Twitter that Ubisoft Barcelona, which did all the underwater levels, is "being fired right now." QA Lead Isabel Codina García also shared her thoughts: "Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced releases today, the project I have been working on for the past 2.5 years. However, two weeks before launch, the whole AC team at Ubisoft Barcelona was informed of a collective redundancy plan."
The layoffs were announced in June and reportedly affect 28% of the workforce in the Barcelona studio, or 51 employees.
Following the job cuts, the workers at the studio, represented by the Coordinadora Sindical del Videojuego (CSVI) union, have started a strike during the negotiations over the layoffs. Ubisoft shared a comment with Video Games Chronicle: "This remains a proposal, and no final decision will be made until the collective consultation process has concluded. We are committed to constructive dialogue with employee representatives and to supporting employees throughout this period."
