Ubisoft Reportedly Cancels Its Animal Crossing-Style Voxel-Based Sim Alterra
No layoffs were reported following the cancellation.
Ubisoft has reportedly canceled Alterra, an in-progress Animal Crossing-inspired social sim.
According to an Insider Gaming report, the company officially discontinued the game, and the employees working on the project learned the news on Tuesday. It is also said that there were no layoffs connected to the cancellation of the game, and staff working on the sim were reassigned to other projects within the company.
Following the news, a Ubisoft spokesperson (via IGN) commented on the company's approach towards its portfolio and the projects featured in it:
"As part of our portfolio management approach and evolving creative house-led model, we continuously assess projects at every stage of development to ensure alignment with our strategic priorities, quality ambitions, and long-term market potential. Projects that no longer meet these expectations may be discontinued."
Alterra was created as a voxel-based social sim with building mechanics reminiscent of Minecraft, featuring interactable NPCs called Matterlings, inspired by both fictional and real-life animals.
