Undo History for Each Blender Object 10,000 Times with This Add-On
Sculpt Rewind brings ZBrush's History Recall Brush to Blender
Spending hours on a 3D model and then realizing that you messed up about a thousand steps ago is a pain every artist knows. But you don't have to undo the whole project if you have Sculpt Rewind, a Blender add-on that records the undo history of each object and lets you go through the changes using a simple slider.
If you think it sounds like ZBrush's History Recall Brush, you're right; it was the exact inspiration for this project created by Michael Berhanu, Nahom Temesgen, and Joshua Tadesse.
Sculpt Rewind is versatile: you can restore the entire mesh or paint selected areas back to an earlier state with its Morph History brush. It records all your sculpting, Edit Mode changes, vertex painting, masks, and face sets, and the history is saved between sessions.
And if you like the result, you can make a time-lapse out of the recorded history with Movie Mode.
Sculpt Rewind is a powerful tool that lets you go back up to 10,000 undo steps without frying your memory. For example, this anime girl from the video above has around 1 million vertices, and taking her 6,000 steps from start to finish took up just 1.8 GB of storage, according to the creators.
"This is possible because Sculpt Rewind doesn’t save a complete copy of the mesh for every step. Instead, it records only the vertices that changed, using full copies when necessary, such as during topology changes like remeshing. It works in parallel with Blender's native undo, so keyboard undoing works as expected."
The add-on will also merge and unmerge object histories. For example, if you sculpted a character with separate arms and torso and merged them, you can still go back to a point before they were merged, undoing what would normally be a destructive operation.
Here is how you can use it in your work:
The creators warn that the tool is not perfect at the moment: for example, Multiresolution and Dynamic Topology sculpting aren’t supported yet, but they are working on improving the workflow.
