Support for Unreal Engine is also coming to Unity's cross-platform commerce platform.
Epic Games
Probably not the announcement anyone saw coming today: longtime rivals Epic Games and Unity have revealed a major partnership to bring Unity-made games into Fortnite. This means that developers will have the ability to publish Unity games in Fortnite, one of the world's largest and closed gaming ecosystems, just like those using Unreal Editor for Fortnite.
Unity is also expanding its new cross-platform commerce platform to support Unreal Engine, giving developers more control over digital catalogs, payments, and web shops across PC, mobile, and web. Starting early next year, Unreal Engine developers will be able to handle pricing, promotions, and live operations directly within the engine.
"Just like the early days of the web, we believe that companies need to work together in order to build the open metaverse in a way that's interoperable and fair," said Tim Sweeney, Founder and CEO of Epic Games. "Working alongside Unity, we're helping developers build fun games, reach bigger audiences, and find success."
Further details about this partnership and product launch timeline will be revealed next year.
Earlier, it was announced that starting next month, creators will be able to sell items directly from their Fortnite islands, and this new partnership could offer further support to smaller developers amid ongoing industry challenges. Still, this move may concentrate even more power in Fortnite, adding to its already massive influence.
