Updated Portal Map Editor In Battlefield 6 Runs On Godot Engine

EA really should make a donation.

All eyes are now on EA, DICE, and the upcoming release of Battlefield 6. Following last week's reveal of the game's single-player campaign, attention has shifted to what the franchise is best known for: its large-scale multiplayer.

During a live event, EA shared fresh information about the return of Portal mode, alongside other key updates. Originally introduced in Battlefield 2042, in Battlefield 6, Portal is not only returning but expanding, featuring powerful level editing tools that let you place and manipulate objects, design custom UI, and create advanced modes.

Battlefield runs on EA's in-house Frostbite, but the Portal editor seems to operate separately from the main Battlefield 6 client, using a custom version of Godot Engine, which has caught the attention of many online. Of course, that makes sense: using a free engine like Godot allows for easy integration and customization of tools for users without having to distribute proprietary software.

Well, it'd be good if they backed it financially. This clearly demonstrates that open-source tools like Godot can offer valuable benefits to AAA studios. Battlefield 6 is set to launch on October 10, 2025, with two free open betas available to all players during the weekends of August 9-10 and August 14-17.
