It will work even with older cables.
USB Promoter Group has announced USB4 Version 2.0, which provides up to 80 Gbps available bandwidth over the USB Type-C cable and connector, it is twice as much as in the previous version.
The performance jump is attributed to a new physical layer architecture, "using existing 40 Gbps USB Type-C passive cables and newly-defined 80 Gbps USB Type-C active cables." The "existing" part means that you can use older cables and still get the new bandwidth, as confirmed by Joe Balich, a spokesperson for the USB-IF. Balich told The Verge that "this benefit was made a requirement when the new specification was developed and the specifics as to how 80Gbps signaling is accomplished will be disclosed once the final specification is released."
USB Promoter Group promises backward compatibility with USB4 Version 1.0, USB 3.2, USB 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3.
The company said protocol updates are also being made to enable higher performance USB 3.2, DisplayPort, and PCI Express data tunneling to best use the higher available bandwidth.
The Group will provide detailed technical training covering the latest updates to the USB4, USB Type-C, and USB PD specifications at USB Developer Days 2022 in November.
